One Week’s Work

March 29th, 2008

The purpose of this blog is to be more than just a collection of my favorite photos, but a record for future interns and photographers interested in applying to the internship. Though there is no such thing as an average week, this post should give you an idea of the intern’s workload and types of assignments I have on any given week.

The editors decided on Friday, based on the forecast, that the A1 centerpiece should be a story about how much colder this Easter was than years past.

Sadly for the story, it didn’t end up being all that cold. I was worried when I headed out this morning along with reporter Clinton Thomas to do some person-on-the-street reporting. I’m happy with how this turned out, thanks in no small part to the fact that this girl was too busy being cold to look into the camera. coldeaster_rg_small.jpg

A cold wind whips at Marilee Dishon her two-year-old grandaughter, Eva Fuemmeler, as the pair head into Fredrick Boulevard Baptist Church for Easter service. Eva refused to wear her Easter dress because of the cold weather.

My second assignment for the day was to find a stand alone for the secondary photo on Monday’s A1. The ‘Cold Easter’ was the A1 centerpiece.

Finding something to shoot on Easter proved to be more of a challenge than I expected. I was not surprised that the only scheduled events in town were the Easter services, but I was hoping to find more people out barbecuing, holding impromptu egg hunts or other outdoor activities. After driving around much of the city and finding little of interest, I had to resign myself to shoot a photo of someone walking their dog. standalone_rgsmall.jpg

Central’s Broc Hurst, right, congratulates Zak Swyhart after Zak’s sixth inning run. The Indians lost to Oak Park 16-8.

That’s right, Central lost. I am often the only person in the photo when editing afternoon and night assignments as the other photographer or two on shift are usually on assignment. Editing your own work can be difficult, especially when on a tight deadline. Turning in this photo was probably the low point of the week.

Crosslights manager Ken Adams says the store’s CD burning capabilities are currently limited to vocal tracks, but an upcoming upgrade will allow customers to burn custom mixes of Christian music, audio books and video games.

The manager said Crosslights has one CD-burning customer on most days. Photographing someone actually using this computer wasn’t an option.fire.jpg

King City resident Charles Porter is suing the Gentry County Commission, alleging that one of the county commissioners assaulted him over his opposition to the Bluegrass Ridge Wind Farm. The farm, which features 27 wind turbines that dot a pastoral landscape near King City, became fully operational in 2007. Suzlon is the manufacturer of the wind turbines.

He took photos of me photographing him - from the public road - to show the state trooper who he called because I was “illegally” photographing his windmill-lined property without his permission.
